A Lucky Uncle
During the hurricane last week one thing really resonates in my mind. I sat there calmly reading,I was trying to finish my reading for the week. I hear the rain ferociously pounding on the tin roof of the house next door. The TV is unclear in the background. Reporters from WAFB are talking in a somewhat distraught way. They are talking of tragedy from Hurricane Issac. My older brother is engulfed in his video game since there is not much else to do. His girlfriend hears the vexatious beep that indicates she has a message and is warped into another mode. She has totally zoned out. It's like she bounded into the phone and is trapped there until the SEND button has been pressed. Then, out of nowhere my little 9 month old nephew proceeds to shriek at the top of his vocal range.
I begin to interrogate myself asking, "Am I the only one who hears this?" It's utterly ridiculous that he is yelling as loud as he is but, no one but me hears it. My eyes begin to scan his face as try to decipher what he is yelling for. I get a inkling that he is excited. Then, I realize he is wailing in very unique way as I to say, "Why are you guys not paying attention to me anymore?" I go over and hoist him into the air. A jubilant visage appears upon his face. He is thinking, "It is time to play Uncle Ellis." We begin to have an absolutely amusing time. He's the greatest baby ever.

Ellis, i love reading your posts. Your word choice and descriptiveness are amazing. I find it so cool that you are an unlce. Although it is exciting for a new baby to come into the household but i do get why you thought no one was paying attention to you because there focused on the new baby, but i love how you reliezed the bigger picture and had nice first moments with your new nephew.
ReplyDeleteThis is really well written. Good word choice and I like how you describe everything in great detail. I feel like i am really in the scene. Your nephew sounds precious.
